3. GENERAL OPERATING
PROCEDURES

3.1 GENERAL

This section contains oper ating
instr uctions for the NAV- 402AP. The
oper ating instr uctions contain gener al
pr ocedur es, identifying the contr ols,
connector s, indicator s used for the
individual test functions. For specific Unit
Under Test ( UUT) Pr ocedur es, r efer to the
appr opr iate UUT Manual.
CAUTION:
WHEN O PERATING THE
TEST SET IN A VERTICAL
PO SITIO N, REMO VE THE
LID TO PREVENT THE TEST
SET FRO M TIPPING O VER.
Refer to 1- 2- 2, Figur e 2 for location of
contr ols, connector s and indicator s.
3.2 SIG NALS SIMULATED
The NAV- 402AP is a bench and r amp test
instr ument for MARKER, VO R, ILS and
CO M equipment.
The NAV- 402AP simulates MARKER
signals with Inner ( 3000 Hz) , Middle
( 1300 Hz) and O uter ( 400 Hz) tones.
VO R G r ound Station signals ar e simulated
by an RF signal modulated by a 30 Hz
r efer ence signal, a var iable 30 Hz signal
and a 9960 Hz signal.
Localizer ( LO C) signals ar e simulated by
modulating RF with 90 and 150 Hz tones.
G lide Slope ( G /S) signals ar e simulated
by modulating RF with 90 and 150 Hz
tones.
CO M signals ar e simulated by modulating
RF with the 400, 1300 or 3000 Hz
MARKER tones or the 1020 Hz IDENT
tone. IDENT can also be applied to
MARKER, VO R or Localizer signals.

3.3 OPERATION CAUTIONS

The NAV- 402AP must be used in the
following fr equency fixed modes dur ing
r amp use:
G COM
G G /S
G LO C
G VO R

3.4 RAMP OPERATION

With the exception of Mar ker Beacon,
most NAV CO M systems of a typical
avionics package can be checked when
the Test Set is placed in a ver tical
position in the cockpit. The antenna is
extended ver tically 2- 3 ft. With the
antenna on the RF O utput Connector , the
VO R, LO C and G /S modes of NAV CO M
Receiver s can be checked and indicator s
oper ated thr ough the limits. The CO M
Receiver can also be oper ated,
modulating the Test Set with either the
400, 1300 or 300 Hz tones or the 1020 Hz
IDENT tone.
O n some installations, the Mar ker Antenna
is located far aft on the fuselage. When
this occur s, and r eceiver sensitivity is low
( - 35 to - 45 dBm) , the Test Set situated in
the cockpit r adiates RF insufficient to
oper ate the Receiver . Moving the Test
Set outside the air cr aft nor mally pr ovides
mor e than enough signal str ength to
completely check Mar ker audio and lights.
To check CO M Tr ansmitter fr equencies
fr om the cockpit, connect the CO M
Tr ansmitter output to the CO M Tr ansmitter
Input Connector and select MHz on the
CO UNTER MO DE Switch. The Test Set
r eads out the CO M Tr ansmitter fr equency
when the CO M Tr ansmitter is keyed.
