7. Remove the eight screws that secure the system board, and then carefully lift the system board out of
the chassis.
Note: Carefully handle the system board by its edges.

8. Remove the microprocessor from the failing system board, and then install it onto the new system
board. See "Replacing the microprocessor" on page 117.
9. Align the eight holes in the new system board with the corresponding screw holes in the chassis. Then,
install the eight screws to secure the system board to the chassis.
10. Route all the cables that you disconnected from the system board, and then reconnect the cables to
the system board. See "Parts on the system board" on page 35.
11. Reinstall the heat sink and fan assembly. See "Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly" on page 116.
12. Reinstall all memory modules. See "Replacing a memory module" on page 113.
13. Reinstall all PCI Express cards. See "Replacing a PCI Express card" on page 108.
14. Reinstall the computer cover and reconnect cables to your computer. See "Completing the parts
replacement" on page 122.
The failing system board must be returned with a microprocessor socket cover to protect the pins during
shipping and handling.
To install the microprocessor socket cover, do the following:
1. After you have removed the microprocessor from the failing system board, close the microprocessor
retainer. Then, put the lever to the locked position to secure the retainer in place.
