IEEE 802.3
The IEEE LAN protocol that specifies an
implementation of the physical layer and the MAC
sublayer of the data link layer. IEEE 802.3 uses
CSMA/CD access at a variety of speeds over a variety
of physical media. Extensions to the IEEE 802.3
standard specify implementations for Fast Ethernet.
IEEE 802.1D
The IEEE standard for bridging.
IGMP
Internet Group Management Protocol. The protocol
that runs between hosts and their immediately
neighboring multicast routers. The mechanisms of the
protocol allow a host to inform its local router that it
wants to receive transmissions addressed to a specific
multicast group. Based on group membership
information learned from the IGMP, a router can
determine which, if any, multicast traffic needs to be
forwarded to each of its "leaf" subnetworks.
in-band
Transmission of auxiliary information, for example,
management messages, over the media that are also
used by the system users.
interface module
Modules that manage data on LAN segments and
receive commands from the EME through the
management bus. Interface modules pass data
through the switch fabric module. The data may get
sent back out to other modules or sent out through a
switch fabric module front panel port to another
device.
Internet Protocol (IP)
The protocol that governs packet forwarding within
the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
(TCP/IP) suite of standards that were developed for
and are used on the Internet.
interoperability
The ability of computer equipment from one vendor
to communicate and exchange information with
equipment from other vendors.
IP address
Internet Protocol address. A unique identifier for a
machine that is attached to a network that is made
up of two or more interconnected local area or wide
area networks.
LAN
Local Area Network. A data communications network
that spans a limited geographical area, such as a
single building or campus. It provides communication
between computers and peripherals. LANs have small
geographical size, high data rate, and low error rate.
Layer 2
Data-link layer of the OSI Reference Model. Defines
the rules for sending and receiving data across the
physical connection between two systems.
