Tip: If available, use special plastic hygienic covers to cover the tip of the
thermometer (these are available from most chemists).

Lubricate the tip of the thermometer (or hygienic cover) with a
water-soluble jelly.
Water-soluble jelly is available from most chemists.
Note: Do not use petroleum jelly.

Press the on/off button I to switch on the thermometer.
4
Lie the baby on its stomach or its side.
5
With one hand, separate the baby's buttocks. With the other hand,
gently slide the tip of the thermometer no more than 12mm (1/2
inch) into the rectum. If you detect any resistance, stop immediately.
Hold the baby firmly so that it cannot turn while the thermometer is
inserted.
Never push the flexible tip too far into the anus.
6
Keep the thermometer in place until it beeps.
See section 'Audible signals' at the end of this chapter for the meaning of
the beeps.
Note: If for some reason the temperature cannot be measured, the display
shows 'Lo' or 'Hi'. This means that the temperature is outside the temperature
range. Switch off the thermometer, check if it is correctly positioned and
switch it on again to restart the measurement.
7
Remove the thermometer and read the display.
8
Press the on/off button I to switch off the thermometer.
Note: Switch off the thermometer after use to save battery power. If you do
not switch off the thermometer, it switches off automatically after 10
minutes.
Measuring the temperature of older children
For older children and adults, the digital flexible-tip thermometer can also
be used to measure temperature orally (in the mouth) or axially (in the
armpit).
