TROUBLE SHOOTING
PROBLEM
Generator voltage fluctuates.
Generator is not able to start
an electric motor.
5.2 ENGINE FAULTS
Remove 3 Amp. fuse in the control panel
while working on the generator to prevent
the engine to start.

5.2.1 General

Most electrical problems relating to Voltage or Frequency are
due to wrong engine speed. Note that RPM and Hz are
basically the same. Use the problem solving table to find the
cause of a wrong engine speed. When there is no obvious
cause one can adjust the RPM (refer to special
procedures).The engine speed of the Whisper 10 is
controlled by an electronic governor should be within a tight
tolerance of 1 %. When not this indicates the electronic
governor to be faulty. When the engine is not cranking well,
starting problems almost always originate from battery
problems or poor battery cable connections. When the
engine is cranking well starting problems almost always
originate from lack of fuel or air bubbles in the fuel pipes.
When the engine does not start instantly,
prolonged cranking can fill up the exhaust
system with cooling water because of the

CAUSE
• Disturbances on the electrical system/
user side.
• Engine runs irregular.
If the generator is unable to supply enough
power to start an electric motor,
this is usually because this motor draws
too much current during starting.
CAUSE
Almost certainly this is an electrical problem Check on water in the cylinders and further
or the engine is blocked by water in the
cylinder or there is other severe damage.

SOLUTION
Check if electrical load is fluctuating.
When engine runs irregular refer to section:
"Engine runs irregular" in engine faults.
Check the electric motor's current draw required
for starting. This should not exceed 70% of the
rated generator peak output current. This could be
remedied by providing stronger capacitors to the
motor or using a "soft-start". Inquire at your
nearest Mastervolt dealer or directly at the
manufacturer, Mastervolt in the Netherlands.

SOLUTION

cylinder, then deactivate the control system,
deconnect the battery, remove the glow plugs.
Crank the engine to remove the water through the
opening of the glow plugs. Check oil on the pre-
sence of water and change oil. Find out how the
water did enter the cylinders (check the air vent).
Take precautions to prevent it from happening
again. When there is no mechanical malfunction
the problem must be an electric malfunction.
Check position of the battery switch and switch
"ON".
