Remove Muffl er
1. Remove the hex. fl ange nuts from exhaust studs
and hex. fl ange screws from muffl er bracket. See
Figures 9-2 and 9-3.
2. Remove the muffl er and gasket from exhaust
outlet fl ange. Some engines may have an
additional heat defl ector insert tube in the exhaust
port, behind the muffl er fl ange. If present, remove
it also.

Remove Retractable Starter
1. Remove the fi ve hex. fl ange screws and
retractable starter. See Figure 9-4.

Remove Electric Starter
Electric Starter (Bendix Drive or Solenoid Shift)
1. Disconnect the lead from the stud terminal on the
electric starter. See Figure 9-5. Disconnect both
leads on Solenoid Shift Starter.
2. Remove the two hex. fl ange screws and starter
assembly. Some bendix drive starters have
additional spacers between the mounting fl ange
and crankcase or under the head of the mounting
bolt. After noting their placement, remove and
retain the spacers.
