Thermostat Removal and Inspection
The thermostat is located toward the rear of the in-
take manifold within the thermostat housing.
1. Remove the thermostat from its housing.
2. To test the thermostat, immerse it in water and
gradually heat the water. The thermostat should
start to open when the water temperature reaches
176 to 183
0
F (80 - 84
0
C). The thermostat should
open by more than 0.31 inches (8 mm) when the
water temperature reaches 203
0
F (95
0
C).
3. Replace the thermostat if the valve remains open
at normal temperatures or if the valve is lose when
the valve is fully closed.
CAUTION
When replacing the thermostat, use genuine
Westerbeke thermostats. These thermostats
are designed specifically for the engines
covered in this manual.
Other, generic
thermostats will not work in the engine, and
may seriously damage the engine should they
be installed.
