Checking the Flywheel and Ring Gear
1. Check the flywheel for damage or wear. Check the
ring gear's teeth for wear. Replace the ring gear
if it is badly worn.
2. Check the runout limit on the flywheel.
Runout Umit: 0.0079 inches (0.20 mm)
2. Replace the ring gear by the following procedure:
A. Heat the ring with a torch.
B. Remove the ring gear by striking its circum-
ference.
C. Heat the new ring gear to 250 - 300

C (480 - 570
0
F) on a hot plate or in an oven. Before slipping it
onto the flywheel, make sure that the chamfered side of the ring gear is directed toward the engine.
NOTE: Excessive heat may destroy the original heat treatment and cause premature failure
of the ring gear.
