1.4.4 Optical Precautions

Under normal operating conditions, the optical fibre equipment forms part of a closed system, i.e., the invisible
radiation produced is contained within closed paths.
However, when the path is broken, (e.g., during testing or board replacement) exposure to the radiation is
possible. The focusing ability of the eye makes it susceptible to damage and safe-working practices must be
adopted to minimize the risk to exposure.
All equipment is intrinsically safe under no fault conditions.
However, it is theoretically possible under fault conditions that the level of power emitted by the equipment
could exceed the class limit for a brief period prior to failure. Although the chances of this happening are small,
it is essential that safe working practices applicable to the systems should be adopted when working on the
equipment.
Generally, observe the following rules.
SAFETY RULES
Possibility of eye damage.
When using fibre optics the following practices should always be adhered to:
CAUTION
Ensure good housekeeping, maintain the cleanliness of fibres, and handle
with care.
