E. Training Equipment and Functions
What is the function in the 9Z trainer programming called "mixer"? What does this mean?
How does it differ from other radios?
The 9Z offers a uniquely powerful option where the instructor can chose to make corrections for the
student without taking the aircraft completely back from the student. This is called "Mix" mode.
The 9Z also offers the option for the master radio to maintain control of any channel(s), giving the
student only the channels the instructor feels s/he can comfortably control.
If I am using the trainer function of my 9Z, does my radio's auto-shut-off feature know it?
Or do I need to turn off auto-shut-off while I'm instructing?
The 9Z's Auto-Shut-Off feature only looks for commands given by your 9Z. Therefore, if you have this
feature turned on while teaching and your student flies longer than the auto-shut-off time, the 9Z will
shut down, with potentially disastrous results. The solution to prevent this ever occurring is simple –
set your auto-shut-down feature to your model's maximum flight time + pre-flight time + 5 minutes.
We recommend setting the timer to 20 minutes. This should avoid this potential issue at any time.
Additionally, please note that simply moving any stick, even only for a split second, is enough to restart
the counter; so as a safety precaution we recommend moving the sticks slightly periodically while your
student is flying (no need to resume control.)

If my receiver is PCM can I use the trainer function?

Yes. The master radio, the one that the instructor is using, can operate on either FM (PPM) or PCM, so
in your situation your transmitter will remain set to PCM. The student radio, however, MUST be set
to FM (PPM). For more information on PCM, please see the Pulse Mode (PMD) section on P. 1-6.
