(7) Rotate crankshaft 2 revolutions. T i m i n g marks
should line up. I f t i m i n g marks do not line up,
remove cam sprocket and realign.
(8) Measure camshaft end play. E n d play should
measure: 0.0127 - 0.381 m m (0.005 - 0.015 in.),
0.381 m m (0.015 in.) m a x i m u m . I f not w i t h i n these
limits, install new t h r u s t plate.
(9) I n s t a l l t i m i n g chain cover. Refer to procedure
outlined i n this section.
OIL PAN
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect negative battery cable.
(2) Raise vehicle. D r a i n engine oil.
(3) Remove oil pan screws and remove oil pan.
N O T E : C l e a n a n d i n s p e c t oil p a n g a s k e t . T h e p a n
g a s k e t c a n b e u s e d a g a i n if in g o o d c o n d i t i o n .
INSTALLATION
(1) Use a new pan gasket, i f necessary (Fig. 56).
(2) I n s t a l l pan and t i g h t e n screws to 11 N - m (95 i n
lbs.).

(3) Lower vehicle and connect negative battery
cable.
(4) F i l l crankcase w i t h o i l to proper level.
CRANKSHAFT OIL SEAL AND RETAINER—REAR
REMOVAL
(1) Remove transmission. Refer to Group 2 1 ,
Transmission for procedures.
(2) Remove clutch and flywheel. Refer to Group 6,
Clutch for procedures.
N O T E : T h e oil s e a l a n d retainer a r e s e r v i c e d a s a n
a s s e m b l y .
(3) Remove bolts attaching seal retainer to cylin-
der block and oil pan (Fig. 57).
(4) Remove oil seal and retainer assembly.
I N S T A L L A T I O N
(1) Clean engine block and retainer of old gasket
material. Make sure surfaces are clean and free of
oil.
(2) I n s t a l l new retainer gasket and carefully posi-
tion retainer/oil seal to block. Tighten bolts to 11 N - m
(95
