Working with Site Surveys

The Site Survey tab appears automatically when you insert the Adapter into the USB
connector of your Mac. This tab shows the following information for the wireless networks
and devices detected by the Adapter.

Signal
Channel
Authentication
Encryption
Network Type
Double-click a network to connect to it. If you do not see the desired wireless network, click
Rescan to search the area again.
If the desired wireless network is not displayed when you perform a site survey, click Add
Profile to create a profile with the necessary connection information for the appropriate
wireless network (see Table 4-1and Table 4-2 ), and then select the profile.
If you try to connect to a network that has security settings enabled, you will need to create a
profile and supply the necessary information. Refer to your wireless router's or access
point's documentation for instructions on how to locate the necessary security information.
Examples of security information you may need are the SSID, authentication mode, and
encryption settings.

Using the SMC Wireless Utility (Mac)
Green check mark = profile is activated.
Red check mark = profile is activated, but Adapter has been removed from the USB slot.
Network name of each available wireless network that is broadcasting its SSID.
Access Point MAC address or random numbers generated for IBSS.
Signal strength of the network.
Channel that each wireless device is using.
Shows whether security is enabled on the wireless network. If security is enabled, the security
settings of your Adapter must match the settings on the wireless network.
Shows whether encryption is enabled on the wireless network. If encryption is enabled, the
encryption settings of your Adapter must match the settings on the wireless network.
Shows whether the wireless network is ad hoc or infrastructure.
