Troubleshooting Guide

If a problem occurs while you are using the remote controller, first try to operate the controls on the front panel of the
DTR-7.4 to make sure that it is not due to a malfunction (or dead batteries) in the remote controller.
Symptoms
No power.
Power turns on but no
sound.
Sound of playback source
is not heard.
Power shuts off immedi-
ately after power on.
No sound from the center
speaker, or at very low vol-
ume.
No sound or very low vol-
ume from subwoofer.
Low frequency humming
is heard.
Howling is heard when the
volume is turned up.
Rough or scratchy sound is
heard. High range is not
clear.
AM stations cannot be
received.
Buzzing noise on AM sta-
tions (particularly notice-
able at night or with weak
stations).
Noise is heard at high-
pitched sounds on AM sta-
tions.
Causes
Power cord is disconnected.
External noise is affecting the internal
microcomputer.
"Muting" is displayed.
Bad connections or wiring.
Input selector is not set properly.
Headphones are connected.
Amplifier protection circuitry is activated.
Speaker cable is not connected.
Listening mode is set to Stereo, Pure Audio
or Direct.
Center speaker volume is set to minimum.
The Center setting is set to "None."
Subwoofer setting is set to "No."
Subwoofer volume is set to minimum.
Not properly grounded.
Turntable motor is not properly grounded. Check for proper ground connection.
Audio connection cables on the rear panel
are connected incorrectly.
Turntable and speakers are located too
close together.
Turntable needle is dirty or worn, or a
problem exists with a connected compo-
nent.
Treble control is too high.
AM loop antenna is not connected.
Noise from electrical apparatus such as
fluorescent lamp.
Noise caused by TV set.
Remedies
Make sure that the power cord is properly plugged
into the wall outlet. Make sure that the other end
of the power cord is properly connected to the
DTR-7.4's AC INLET (See page 27).
Turn off the power, wait five seconds, and then
turn the power back on (See page 27).
Press the Muting button on the remote controller
to turn off muting (See page 40).
Check connections, speaker cables, and other wir-
ing (See pages 18 to 26).
Set to correct input source (See page 40).
Lower volume and then disconnect headphones
(See page 40).
Remove the power cord from outlet immediately.
Contact your Onkyo service center.
Check the connection between DTR-7.4 and
speaker (See page 18).
Set the Listening mode to any mode other than
Stereo, Pure Audio or Direct. The output to the
center speaker may differ depending on the listen-
ing mode (See page 44).
Set the center speaker level to the appropriate vol-
ume (See pages 34, 35).
Set the Center setting to "Large" or "Small" at
Setup Menu → Speaker Setup Menu → Speaker
Config Sub-menu (See page 33).
Set the Subwoofer setting to "Yes" at Setup Menu
→ Speaker Setup Menu → Speaker Config Sub-
menu (See page 33).
Set the subwoofer level to the appropriate volume
(See pages 34, 35).
Check outer conductor of input plugs.
Adjust the placement of the cables to reduce hum.
Move them farther apart.
Refer to the instructions of the connected compo-
nents and check for problems.
Turn treble setting down at Setup Menu → Audio
Adjust Menu → Tone Control Sub-menu (See
page 54).
Connect the included AM loop antenna to the AM
antenna terminals (See page 14).
Move the AM loop antenna to different position.
Set up an outdoor AM antenna (See page 15).
Place the AM loop antenna as far as possible from
the TV.
Move DTR-7.4 away from TV set.
