When you first choose a diagnostic option, the library prompts you to press
ENTER to put the library in Maintenance Mode.
Note: In Maintenance Mode, the library goes offline to the host. Make sure all
host activity has stopped before proceeding.
If you wish to continue, the display prompts you to insert a "diagnostic" cartridge.
A diagnostic cartridge is an ordinary type IV or type IIIXT cartridge with a "DG"
label attached. This is required by the library for diagnostic routines. Any other
cartridge is rejected at this point. If you start these routines and do not have a DG
tape, you might need to reset the library by pressing RESET, or by opening and
closing the front door, in order to exit Maintenance Mode.
When you put the library in Maintenance Mode and insert a diagnostic tape, the
library retains that tape, enabling you to run more than one diagnostic routine
without leaving Maintenance Mode. When you are finished with Library
Diagnostics, press MENU (once or several times, as required) to exit Maintenance
Mode, retrieve the diagnostic tape, and return to a higher-level menu.
The library provides detailed prompts for running the diagnostic routines (including
specifying drives for mounts and dismounts). Select the desired routine using the
arrow buttons, and press ENTER. Then follow the prompts given on the operator
panel display.
Examine FSCs
Fault symptom codes (FSCs) are four hexadecimal digits that identify an error in
the system. The Examine FSCs menu option allows the operator to view the last
20 fault symptom codes. Use the arrow buttons to scroll the lines of the display.
An example of the FSC display is shown below.
