Instal[dipstickandturn to [goRed p ositionbefore startingengine.

Startengine.Allow to runfor afewseconds a ndthenshutdownthe engine.

Check t he o11 l evel.SeeChecking 0 1{Level s ection.
Checkingthe SparkPlug
DONOT checkfor sparkwith sparkplug removed. D ONOT crankenginewith
sparkplug removed.
Toensureproperengineoperation, t he sparkplug mustbeproperlygapped and
freeofdeposits.
1.
Remove t he sparkplug bootanduseasparkplugwrenchto remove the
plug.
If the enginehasbeenrunning, the muffler will be veryhot. Becareful not
to touchthe muffler.
Visuallyinspect t he sparkplug.Discard t he sparkplugif thereisapparent
wear, o r if the insulatoriscracked or chipped.Clean the sparkplug with a
wirebrushif it isto bereused.

Measure the pluggapwith afeelergauge. C orrect asnecessary b ybending
sideelectrode. S eeFigure 15.Thegapshouldbesetto 0.024-0.031 i n.
4.
Check thatthe sparkplug washer isingoodcondit{on andthreadthe spark
plugin byhandto preventcross-threading.
5.
Afterthe sparkplug isseated, t ightenwith asparkplugwrenchto compress
the washer.
NOTE: Wheninstallinganewsparkplug,tighten 1/2turn afterthe spark
plugseats to compress t he washer. W henreinstallingausedsparkplug,
tighten 1/8-1/4 turn after thesparkplugseats to compress t he washer.
IMPORTANT: Thesparkplug mustbesecurely tightened.An improperly
tightenedsparkplug canbecome veryhot andmaydamage the engine.

If filters, or coversare not installed correctlyseriousinjuryor death

removed.
Donot usepressurizedair or solventsto cleanthe air filter cartridge.
Paper f ilterscannotbecleaned andshouldbereplaced every100operatinghours;
moreoften if usedinextremely dustyconditions.
