TWO.THREAD
SERG¡NG
Two-thread
serging provides
a
decorative and
functional
seam
known
as
a
"flatlock"
seam. Use
it
to
create
flat,
non-bulky
seams
in
garments
from
lingerie
to fun-fur
coats. The decorative
appearance
of flatlock
seaming
can
be
accented
by
using
a heavier
thread, or metallic or
variegated
thread in the lower
looper.
Besides
flatlock
seaming,
two-thread
serging
provides
an
economical
yet sturdy
means
of
overcasting
on
most
fabrics.
*To
convert your
serger
for
two-thread
sewing.
1.
Eliminate either
the right
or
left
needle
and
its
corresponding
thread.
(See
page
37)
Use
the
left
needle
for
wider
flat-lock
stitching;
use
the
right
needle
for
a
narrower stitch.
2.
Open
the
front
cover;
turn
the
handwheel away
from you
to
bring the
needle
to
its lowest position.
3.
Cut the
upper looper thread
at the
eye
of
the
looper
and,
without
unthreading
all
the thread
guides,
bring the
loose
thread
up
and over
its
own tension
disc
(green).
This
holds
the
unused
thread
out
of
the
way.
4.
Push
on
the
brass
subsidiary-looper
screw
with
your finger or
a
small screw
driver,
and
rotate
it
to
the
left until
the
tip
of
the
subsidiary-looper
seats
securely
in the
eye
of
the upper looper,
thus
disengaging
it.
5.
Move
the thread
guide
switch
from
the
blue
"3"
to
the
red
"2".
6.
Loosen
the
needle
thread tension adjuster (yellow or
orange)
to
about
number
"2".
