6. When
decelerating
the motorcycle,
coordination of the throttle and the
front and rear brakes is most impor-
tant.
. The
smooth
gradual application of
both
the front and rear brakes to-
gether
with
the
required
throttle
coordination
will, under
most
con-
ditions, assure positive speed reduction
28
and stability. As the motorcycle speed
is reduced, it is common practice to
downshift
the transmission
progres-
sively into the appropriate gear. This
assures maximum control through bet-
ter braking effectiveness and accelera-
tion when necessary.
. For maximum
deceleration and brak-
ing, close the throttle, apply both the
front and rear brakes simultaneously,
and as the motorcycle comes to a stop,
disengage the clutch.
This maneuver requires smooth coordi-
nation of the controls and to maintain
skill it should be practiced frequently.
Independant application of either the
front or rear brake is possible, but if
only one
brake
is applied strongly
enough to lock the respective wheel,
braking effectiveness is greatly reduced
and control of the motorcycle is dif-
ficult.
