checking and Playing the Program
Press the CHECK button to display the content of the program.
The track
numbers
and
step
numbers
appear
in the pro-
grammed order each time the CHECK button is pressed.

The total playing time for the programmed tracks and the dis-
play of the programmed tracks do not change.

Press the PLAY button to.begin programmed playback.
The time display switches from the total_playback time for the
programmed tracks to the elapsed time per track.

Tocorrect the program,
press the CLEAR button and start over.

The
content
of the
program
cannot
be checked
during
pro-
grammed playback, even if the CHECK button is pressed.

The program is cleared in the following cases:
When the CLEAR button is pressed.

When the EDIT button is pressed.
— When the OPEN/CLOSE button is pressed.
When the power is turned off.
Use the display of the total! playing time for the programmed
tracks to select a, tape of the proper length or choose tracks
which will fit on: the tape when conducting: programmed
re-
cording.

Both Deck 1 and Deck 2. are auto reverse recording and playback
decks.

In this manual we describe operation on Deck 1. Deck 2 operates
in the same way.
1.
Press the EJECT button and open the cassette tid.
2». Load the cassette tape.
Load the cassette tape with the side on which the tape is visible
facing down.
After loading the tape, press the cassette lid to close it.
3.
Set the DOLBY NR switch.

B: For tapes recorded with Dolby B.
OFF: For tapes recorded without Dolby.
C: For tapes recorded with Dolby C.

Press the FORWARD PLAY or REVERSE
PLAY button to start
playback.
When the FORWARD
PLAY button is pressed, playback starts
of the front (outer) side and the FORWARD indicator lights.
When the REVERSE PLAY button is pressed, playback starts of
the rear side and the REVERSE indicator lights.
Cassette Tapes

Metal tapes without detection holes cannot be used on this deck,
since the auto tape selector cannot detect them.
@
Endless tapes cannot be used on this deck.
@
C-120 cassette tapes are convenient for long-term playback, but
as they use extremely thin tape which may get stuck in the mech-
anism through repeated
playing, stopping, fast forwarding
and
rewinding, it is better to. avoid using them.
@
Take up any slack in the tape before using it (Fig. 32). If a slack
tape is used, it may get caught in the mechanism, damaging the
mechanism and the tape.
Quick Reverse
The quick reverse
mechanism
is activated when the deck is in the
playback, recording or dubbing mode for over 12 seconds.

The quick reverse mechanism will not function if playback or re-
cording is started near the end of the tape (less than 12 seconds
from the end).
@
The quick reverse mechanism
may not function with wrinkled or
damaged tapes, or tapes which have been cut and taped together.
Playback Level Display
This indicates the playback level separately for the left and right chan-
nels, regardless of the INPUT LEVEL control setting.
Tape Counter
The tape counter display changes
as shown
below when
playback
starts.
When recording, make note of the number on the counter at the begin-
nings and ends of selections to -make it easy to find them later.
When playback starts in the forward direction: (Fig. 33)
When playback starts in the reverse direction: (Fig. 34)

Press the COUNTER RESET button to reset the counter to "0000".

The counter
is reset to "0000"
when
the amplifier's. power
is
turned off.
Auto Reverse
Three different reverse modes can be set using the DIRECTION: MODE
switch. Set the switch to the desired position before (or during) play-
back.
One-side playback (=_~ ): Only one side of the tape is played.
Two-side playback ("__): Both sides of the tape are played once.
If playback starts from the.reverse side, only the reverse side is played.
Continuous playback ((_): Both sides of the tape are played con-
tinuously.
Auto Tape Selector
The tape type (normal, chrome
or metal) is detected
automatically
when the tape is loaded, and the bias and equalization are set accord-
ingly.
Sequential Playback Between Decks 1 and 2 (Fig. 35).
1.
Load tapes in both Deck 1 and Deck.2.
2.
Set the DIRECTION MODE switch to the

(SEQ PLAY) position.
3.
Press one of the PLAY buttons (FORWARD or REEMSe)
© on Deck
1 or Deck 2.
Playback continues from Deck 1 to Deck 2 and vice-versa : until
the STOP button for the deck currently playing is pressed.

Memory Stop (Fig. 36)
1.
Before starting playback,
press the COUNTER
RESET button to
reset the counter to "0000".
2.
Press the MEMORY STOP button:before (or during) playback. The
"MS" indicator lights.
3.
Start playback, press the STOP button when the desired place is
reached, then press the REWIND button to rewind the tape.
4.
The tape is rewound
to the place where
the counter
reaches
"0000" and stops automatically (at "9999").
5.
Press
the
FORWARD
PLAY
button
to resume
playback.
(The
counter starts counting from "0000".)

To cancel the memory
stop function, press the MEMORY
STOP
button again to turn the "MS" indicator off.

The memory
stop function will not work if the FAST FORWARD
button is pressed.

For Deck 1, the ASF function has priority over the memory stop
function.
Stopping Playback Temporarily
1.
Press the PAUSE buiton.
(The FORWARD or REVERSE indicator starts flashing.)
2.
Press the PAUSE button again to resume. playback.
(The FORWARD or REVERSE indicator stops flashing.)
Stopping Piayback
1.
Press the STOP button.
2.
To remove the tape, press the EJECT button.
