WARNING
When the steering assist is not working, it is very difficult to turn the steering
wheel, requiring greater effort to steer the vehicle.
The steering assist only operates when the engine is running.
Never let your vehicle roll with the engine switched off.
Never remove the vehicle key from the ignition while the vehicle is in mo-
tion. The steering lock can engage and the vehicle can no longer be steered.
Information about the steering
First read and observe the introductory information and safety warn-
ings
on page 49.
To make a theft of the vehicle more difficult, the steering should always be
locked before you exit the vehicle.

Insert the vehicle key into the ignition
lock.
Hold the steering wheel in this position
and switch on the ignition.

Adjust the steering wheel before driving and only when the vehicle is stationary.

Adjust the steering wheel to the desired position (with regard to the height and
forward/back position).
Push the lever firmly upward until it is flush with the steering column
WARNING
Improper use of the steering wheel position adjustment and an incorrect ad-
justment of the steering wheel can cause serious or fatal injuries.
Always firmly fold the lever
steering wheel does not unintentionally change its position while driving.
Never adjust the steering wheel while driving. If you determine during the
ride that an adjustment is necessary, stop safely and adjust the steering
wheel properly.
The adjusted steering wheel must always point toward the chest and not in
the direction of the face, to prevent the protective effect of the driver's front
airbag from being restricted in the event of an accident.
While driving, always hold the side of the steering wheel with both hands at
the outer edges (9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions) to reduce injuries in the
event that the driver's front airbag is deployed.
Never hold the steering wheel in the 12 o'clock position or in any other way,
for example, in the steering wheel centre. If the driver's front airbag is de-
ployed, serious injuries to the arms, hands and head may result.
Electronic immobiliser
First read and observe the introductory information and safety warn-
ings
on page 49.
An electronic chip is integrated in the head of the key. The immobiliser is deacti-
vated with the aid of this chip when the key is inserted in the ignition lock. The
electronic immobiliser is automatically activated when the ignition key is with-
drawn from the lock.
The engine will not start if a non-authorized ignition key is used.
