62 Server security, administration, and maintenance software features
An administrator uses the Provisioning Client to restrict the services on a
domain basis. From the Provisioning > Services > Assign Services screen,
the Instant Messaging and Client Collaboration services appear in the list of
services. The PC Clientset Control in the Allowed Clients service controls
the ability to associate an IP Phone to the Multimedia PC Client.
When a user is logged out of the Multimedia PC Client, services that are
controlled by service packages are not available.
If a service package changes for a user while the function is being used (for
instance Instant Messaging is turned off while the user is in an IM session),
all activity related to the service is stopped. The icons for the service are
removed and disabled. In IM sessions, the IM window remains open, but no
messages can be sent or received. The user can save the IM conversation.
Collaboration sessions that are in progress are allowed to finish, but no
new collaborations can start.
Service packages affect the Personal Agent Routes functionality. If the IM
service package is not enabled for the user or domain, there are no rules
for IM routes.

Instant Messaging

When the Instant Messaging (IM) service is permitted in the domain, the IM
Chatroom service can be permitted or restricted. When Instant Messaging
is disabled, the IM Chatroom service is disabled.
At the user and group level, the Instant Messaging (IM) service can be
configured. With the service enabled, the user or group can send and
receive instant messages to and from other users in the system using the
Multimedia PC Client, a telephone associated with the Multimedia PC
Client, an IP Phone or the Assistant Console. With the IM service active,
users can also use the IM Chat, IM Broadcast and IM Routing features.
Disabling the service for the user or group removes the ability to send and
receive instant messages. When instant messages are not permitted, the
Instant Message icon or soft key is not displayed to the user. As well,
Chat, IM Broadcast and IM Routing are disabled, and their icons are not
displayed to the user.
When a user tries to send an instant message to a person who does not
have the IM service available, a message is displayed indicating that the IM
service is not available to that person.
