72 Server security, administration, and maintenance software features
Personal Agent
When a failed authentication attempt occurs in the Personal Agent, the
user account is locked for 3 seconds. Under normal usage, the lockout is
not noticeable, since it takes more than 3 seconds, typically, to navigate
to the appropriate link and retype the password. However, brute force
password-cracking programs try another password in less than 3 seconds,
and therefore encounter the lockout.
To avoid misuse, the number of failed authentication attempts and the
duration are not configurable.
When the lock out occurs, a log is generated.

Multimedia Web Client

The Multimedia Web Client is downloaded to the user's computer from
the Personal Agent. This feature adds HTTPS support for the software
download operation.

Bulk Provisioning Tool

This feature adds TLS to the Bulk Provisioning Tool (BPT). A new command
line option specifies the use of HTTP or HTTPS.
-protocol <http/https> -port <port#>
The BPT is preconfigured with various public CA certificates as well as
the Nortel self-signed X.509 certificate. The BPT employs an out-of-band
mechanism to install and remove certificates.
When authentication fails, an invalid login attempt message is received.

Application Programming Interfaces

The Open Provisioning Interface, Client Open Provisioning Interface and
Subscriber Open Provisioning Interface support HTTPS, since they have
certificate management.

Network engineering

The first Personal Agent is deployed on the combined Provisioning Manager
and Personal Agent server. If additional Personal Agents elements are
required, extra servers can be added to the network. The Personal Agent
network element is separate from the Provisioning Client network element.
The Personal Agent network element is optional.

The default for the -protocol option is http.
The default for the -port option is 8080 for HTTP or 8443 for HTTPS.
