CROSSING OBSTACLES

Approach Angle
If you encounter a large dip in the
terrain, do not enter straight on.
Enter with an approach angle
between 15°
and 75°
For very large dips, ditches or small
washes, coast in (with the trans-
mission and transfer case in the
lowest gears) using the engine as a
brake. Then, use the low ranges in
the transmission and transfer case
to power out.
A
Large Rocks
Roll the tyres over large rocks. Do
not straddle large rocks. Drive over
them, letting the tyre envelop the
rock. The tread of the tyre is thick-
er and tougher than the side wall
.
of the tyre and is more resilient to
impact than underbody
components.
Section 3
A
Log Crossing
Using the proper technique,
the vehicle will cross logs up to
25.4 cm (10 inches) in diameter.
Approach the log at approximate-
ly a 15° angle
with the transmis-
sion in first gear and the transfer
case in Four-Wheel Low Lock, and
"walk" the vehicle over, one tyre at
a time.
It may be necessary to alternate
between your brake pedal and
accelerator to avoid spin-out. Ease
the vehicle down from the log
using your brake.
