Condenser microphones (as opposed to Dynamic microphones) require +48v phantom power. The VS-
880 does not provide phantom power. If you have a condenser mic and wish to use it with the VS-880,
the following options are available:
¥
An external phantom power unit may be used and its output plugged into an Input on the VS-880.
¥
An external microphone pre-amplifier with phantom power may be used and its output plugged into
an Input on the VS-880.
¥
A condenser microphone may be plugged into a channel of an external mixer that provides
phantom power (such as a Mackie™ 1604) and that channelÕs direct output may be plugged into an
Input on the VS-880.
NOTE: Remember, balanced Inputs can be plugged directly into the VS-880Õs Inputs. The VS-880 has
unbalanced Input circuits, but Tip-Ring-Sleeve (1/4Ó) Input jacks.
C. Route the Input to the Channel
After we have made our connection, we will need to setup the Input channel (1) to record on a certain
Track (1). Remember, any Input (1-6) can be setup to record on any Track (1-8).
1) Press the CH EDIT button 1 to select channel 1.
2) Hold SHIFT, then press Input/BUSS (CH EDIT button 1). ItÕs the same button we pressed in step 1, but since
we held SHIFT, this will bring up the Input/BUSS screen in the display (if it is not already displayed).
3) Using the TIME/VALUE dial, select Input 1 to be routed to channel 1 (the VS-880 defaults to this
setting, so it is probably already set this way).
4) If we wanted to setup another channel to record on, we would press the corresponding CH EDIT button
1-8 and turn the TIME/VALUE dial to choose the Input. The channel number shows at the top left hand
corner of the display. You can experiment by choosing various channels and setting their Input
sources.
D. Record enable Tracks
Now that we have routed the signal to the Track weÕre going to record it on, we will enable that Track to
record.
1) Press the STATUS button of Track 1 until it flashes red. This means that this Track is enabled for recording.
If you just wanted to hear what the microphone was picking up without having to be record enabled,
press STATUS until it lights orange. In this case, the Source status allows you to monitor whatever is
coming through the Input on that channel.
E. Adjust recording levels using the INPUT SENS knobs
Next, we will make sure that we get a good recording level. If the signal is distorting, you will be able to
hear it in your headphones. Use the following instructions to make sure this doesnÕt happen:
1) Play the Input source (voice/instrument) as loud as it will occur during the performance and turn the
INPUT SENS 1 (Input sensitivity) knob clockwise until the PEAK light turns red, then turn it back
(counterclockwise) a bit until the red light stays unlit while youÕre singing/playing. For dynamic
microphones, the INPUT SENS knob will usually be turned all the way up, or almost all the way up
(clockwise) for normal speaking voice.
Also, at this point you can use Fader 1 to change the volume in your headphones or speakers. Keep in
mind (because weÕre in INPUTcTRACK mode) the fader will not effect the recording level Ð only the
listening level.
2) Listen for overloading or clipping in the headphones and turn down (counter-clockwise) the INPUT
SENS 1 knob accordingly.
