The other half of this mix mode is TRACK MIX. Once you have recorded a few Tracks in INPUT MIX mode,
you may want to continue using it to record additional Tracks. To adjust playback levels of Tracks you have
already recorded while youÕre recording new Tracks, switch to TRACK MIX mode.
TRACK MIX mode is setup so that the audio recorded on Track 1 of the recorder is controlled by Channel 1
of the mixer. The same is true of all the other Tracks/Channels. Just press the SELECT button to toggle
between INPUT MIX and TRACK MIX mode.
By using the SELECT button to switch back and forth (toggle) between INPUT MIX and TRACK MIX, youÕre
basically accessing two different mixers with the same set of physical controls (sliders, knobs and buttons).
The cool thing is, each mixer (Input & Track) retains its own settings when you switch to the other. The
fader level, pan position, and EQ settings that you setup in INPUT MIX mode are memorized by the VS-
880. So, when you switch to TRACK MIX mode and adjust the fader for channel 1 (for example), the level
of Input 1 in INPUT MIX mode is not affected.

Notice that the audio recorded on the Tracks (after it passes through the EQ, Fader, and Pan) can be
routed to the Mix buss for monitoring, or to any of the record busses. Routing the Track(s) to a record buss is
an easy way to merge Tracks or record effects to a Track (we will go into detail on this later).
So, just to sum up and review the differences and applications of each mixer mode:
INPUTc c c c TRACK mode is the default mode where the Input signal is recorded directly to disk Ð bypassing
the mixer. Recording in this mode is quick and easy. You can listen to effects from the VS8F-1 while youÕre
recording and they wonÕt be recorded to disk. This is great for tracking vocals or guitar when you want to be
able to give the musician some ambiance for expressive recording, but still have the option of changing
the effects later on. For basic recording of any kind, INPUTcTRACK is the quickest and easiest method.
Also, when youÕre done recording all your Tracks and you want to master the song to DAT, you might prefer
to do so from INPUTcTRACK mode because itÕs in this mode that you have access to 3 band parametric
EQ on each channel.
INPUT MIX mode is for mixing live Tracks from an external source (like our sequencing example) along
with recorded Tracks. While youÕre mixing live Tracks in INPUT MIX, you will be mixing the recorded
Tracks from TRACK MIX Ð switching back and forth with the SELECT button. When we say ÒmixingÓ, weÕre
referring not only to moving the faders to change volume, but also the panning positions of each Track, the
EQ, and the effects settings.
TRACK MIX mode is where you may find yourself doing Track bouncing (recording two or more Tracks onto
one Track or a stereo pair), recording audio with effects or EQ printed (recorded) to disk, and recording
multiple Inputs and/or Tracks to two Tracks (1-2, 3-4, 5-6 or 7-8). You can also use this mode to setup your
recording so that the dry signal is recorded to one Track and the effect for that instrument is recorded to a
different Track. In other words, if youÕre recording a guitar solo with a massive distortion/delay effect, you
can record the guitar signal to Track 1 and the distortion delay signal to Track 2. This way, you have
control over the amount of effect used with the guitar solo all the way until final mixdown, and you free-up
the effects processor to do different effects for other Tracks (reverb for vocals or compression for bass).
