Solving Modem Problems
Problem
Modem does
not connect at
highest speed
(continued).
Fax transmissions
do not work.
Characters are
garbled/transfer
rates are slow.

Possible Cause
There is noise on
the telephone line.
The 56K protocol of
an internal modem
will fall back to
lower speeds if the
telephone line is
too noisy for a
high-speed
connection.
Another
communications
software
application is
open.
Modem is
receiving
inadequate power.
The wrong printer
driver is selected.
There is noise in
the telephone line.
Settings on the
sending and
receiving modem
do not match.
Solution
Use another telephone line.
Change the Hang-up Delay S
Register: At the command line
in terminal mode, type
ATS10=150, then press Enter.
NOTE: This command causes
the modem to take longer to
disconnect even if there is no
noise on the line.
Close the other
communications application.
Also, refer to "Installing and
Loading Fax Communication
Software" in Chapter 9.
Connect the computer to
external power
or
If the computer must run from
a battery pack,
Make sure the battery
pack is fully charged.
Clear all power
conservation selections.
Verify that you have selected
the correct printer driver.
Request a telephone line
filter from your local
telephone service provider.
Use the same parity, modem
speed, word length, and stop
bits settings on both
modems.
