Amplifier Firmware Upgrade Procedure

TAP Cable build instructions
Obtain a female DB9 9 pin D-Sub connector. Obtain a 3 pin connector, part number 172930-3.
This is the same connector as used for the Serial I/O and TV Sense inputs to the TA-1 amplifier.
Obtain 3 different colored 18 AWG wires. Twist them together to reduce induced noise into the
cable. Connect/solder the three wires as listed below.

DB9-2 -> 3 (amplifier Tx)
Establishing Serial Communication with the amplifier
1. Set up your IBM compatible PC as shown in the Computer Setup Procedure in the
Appendix of this manual.
2. Connect the test cable to the TA-1 amplifier at J9. Connect the DB-9 connector to the
serial data port on the the IBM PC that you configured in step 1.
3. Open the connection you have set up in the Hyperterm window.
4. Once connected, power up the TA-1 amplifier. You should see: *D0B or a similar response.
If you do not, there could be a cabling problem.
5. Press Enter and you should see the TA-1 amplifier respond with a '>'.
Downloading New Firmware to the amplifier
1. Leave the PC connected to the TA-1 amplifier.
2. Remove AC power to the TA-1 amplifier.
3. Short the IR "IN" to ground with a jumper.
4. Return AC to the TA-1 amplifier. This time when you power up the TA-1 amplifier you should
not see any serial messages.
5. Select Transfer, Send Text File, and select the correct hex file (the version you want to
upgrade to.) You will need to change the Files of type to "All files" to "see" the .hex file.
6. Immediately after selecting the file, it will be downloaded to the TA-1 amplifier but you will not
see any activity. Be patient, this will take a little over 30 seconds.
7. At the completion of the download you should see many "."s followed by a "+".
Wait for the "+" before proceeding. You may see a batch of "."s without the "+".
This first set of "."s will be followed eventually with a "+".
8. Remove the shorting wire and cycle the AC power to the TA-1 amplifier.
Press return and then "V<cr>". This will show the firmware version and date.
The version should match the one you just loaded (e.g. 2C for dh2c.hex).
