SPARK PLUG SERVICING
WARNING
Before removing spark plug, the muf er becomes very
hot during operation and remains hot for a while after
stopping the engine. Be careful not to touch the muf er
while it is hot.
The spark plug must be securely tightened. An
improperly tightened spark plug can become very hot
and may cause engine damage.
To ensure proper engine operation, the spark plug must be
properly gapped and free of deposits.
• Remove the spark plug cap.
• Clean any dirt from around the spark plug base.
• Use a plug wrench to remove the spark plug.
• Visually inspect the spark plug. Discard them if the insulator is
cracked or chipped. Clean the spark plug with a wire brush if
it is to be reused.
• Measure the plug gap with a feeler gauge. Correct as
necessary by bending the side electrode.
• Check that the spark plug washer is in good condition and
thread the spark plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading.
• After the spark plug is seated, tighten with a spark plug
wrench to compress the washer.
• If installing a new spark plug, tighten 1/2 turn after the spark
plug seats to compress the washer.
• If reinstalling a used spark plug, tighten 1/8 - ¼ turn after the
spark plug seats to compress the washer.

BATTERY MAINTENANCE

WARNING
GASES FROM BATTERY can explode.
Keep sparks, ame and cigarettes away from
battery.
To prevent EXPLOSION when:
INSTALLING A NEW BATTERY — disconnect negative
cable from old battery rst and connect to new battery
last.
CONNECTING A BATTERY CHARGER — remove
battery from welder by disconnecting negative cable
rst, then positive cable and battery clamp. When
reinstalling, connect Negative cable last. Keep well
ventilated.
USING A BOOSTER — connect positive lead to battery
rst then connect negative lead to negative battery lead
at engine foot.
BATTERY ACID can burn eyes and
skin.
Wear gloves and eye protection and be careful
when working near battery.
Follow instructions printed on battery.
To access the battery, remove the 4 screws from the front battery
cover. Slide the battery out only far enough to access the battery
terminals.
CLEANING THE BATTERY: Keep the battery clean by wiping it
with a damp cloth when dirty. If the terminals appear corroded,
disconnect the battery cables and wash the terminals with an
ammonia solution or a solution of 1/4 pound (0.11kg) of baking
soda and 1 quart (0.1 L) of water. Be sure the battery vent plugs (if
equipped) are tight so that none of the solution enters the cells.
After cleaning, ush the outside of the battery, the battery
compartment, and surrounding areas with clear water. Coat the
battery terminals lightly with petroleum jelly or a non-conductive
grease to retard corrosion. Keep the battery clean and dry.
Moisture accumulation on the battery can lead to more rapid
discharge and early battery failure.
CHECKING THE ELECTROLYTE LEVEL If battery cells are low, ll
them to the neck of the ller hole with distilled water and
recharge. If one cell is low, check for leaks.
CHARGING THE BATTERY When you charge, jump, replace, or
otherwise connect battery cables to the battery, be sure the
polarity is correct. Improper polarity can damage the charging
circuit. The Ranger positive (+) battery terminal has a red terminal
cover.
If you need to charge the battery with an external charger,
disconnect the negative cable rst, then the positive cable before
you attach the charger leads. After the battery is charged,
reconnect the positive battery cable rst and the negative cable
last. Failure to do so can result in damage to the internal charger
components. Follow the instructions of the battery charger
manufacturer for proper charger settings and charging time.
