Maintenance
Routine inspection and maintenance is necessary to prolong outboard life. The following chart
provides guidelines for inspection and maintenance to be performed by an authorized Dealer.
IMPORTANT: Outboards used in rental, commercial, or other high hour applications require
more frequent inspections and maintenance. Adjust schedule for operating and environmental
conditions.
Description
Anti-corrosion anodes
Electrical and ignition wires, inspect for wear or chafing
Engine to transom mounting hardware, re-torque (40 ft. lbs.)
Fasteners, inspect any loosened components
Fuel and oil system components, inspect and repair leaks

Fuel filter, replace
Gearcase lubricant, replace
Grease fittings, lubricate
Muffler foam, inspect, replace if necessary (40–90 HP models only)
Oil Filter, replace (V4 & V6 models only)
Power trim/tilt system and fluid level, inspect
Propeller shaft splines, inspect and lubricate
Spark plugs, inspect and replace if necessary
Starter pinion shaft, inspect and lubricate (electric start models only)
Steering system, inspect and lubricate
Thermostat and pressure valve, inspect
Throttle cable and shift cable inspect
Water pump, inspect or replace if necessary
(1) Average recreational use. Commercial use, heavy use, or use in salt or polluted water requires more
frequent inspection and maintenance (annual checks are recommended).
(2) Annually in salt water applications – Refer to Service on page 59.
(3) Emission-related component. Refer to Owner Responsibility on page 56, Product Warranty
Information on page 79 and, if applicable, California Emission Control Warranty Statement on page
86.
(4) Replace boat-mounted fuel filter annually. Refer to Boat-Mounted Fuel Filters on page 72.
