Proportional Spacing
In fixed spacing, each character has exactly the same width, but you can
change the number of characters per inch (cpi) to print.
Proportional spacing, however, gives a different width depending on the
character.
By selecting the appropriate national character set, you can print in a
different language. The set is selected using a combination of the DIP
switches. (See also Appendix B: Code Pages and Character Sets.)
Character pitch lets you print characters in fixed or proportional spacing.
The illustration below shows their difference.
