Troubleshooting and Maintenance

Error Messages

You may occasionally encounter a difficulty with your machine or telephone line. If this happens,
your machine often identifies the problem and displays an error message. The list below explains the
most common error messages.

CAUSE
The paper is jammed in the machine. See "Clearing Jams" on page 67.
The FAX/MFC is out of paper or
paper is not properly loaded in the
multipurpose sheet feeder.
The scanner is dirty.
A poor quality phone line resulted
in a communications error.
from another party, but the other fax
machine is not in Poll Waiting mode.
The other party has disconnected
during a call or fax.
The documents were not inserted or
fed properly, or were too long.
There is a mechanical problem.
The number you called does not
answer or is busy. You may also
have reached a number not
connected to a fax.
You've tried accessing a One
Touch or Speed Dial location with
no number assigned to it.
The print head has overheated.
Scanner needs cleaning.
The top cover is not completely
closed.
ACTION
Refill the paper or remove the paper
and load it again and then press
Start.
See "Regular Maintenance" on
page 70.
Try the call again.
Verify the other parties polling
setup.
Try calling the other party.
See "Clearing Jams" on page 67.
Cut the power off. Then contact
your Brother dealer for service.
Check the number and call again.
See "Setup Quick Dial Numbers
for Easy Dialling" on page 18 for
information about storing One
Touch or Speed Dial numbers.
Unplug the machine and wait 30
minutes for it to cool.
Clean the white tape and the glass
strip under the tape. See "Regular
Maintenance" on page 70. If you
still get a scanner error, contact
Brother dealer for service.
Close the top cover.
