Brake Maintenance

Adjusting the Service
Brakes
Adjust the service brakes when there is more than
2.5 cm (1 inch) of free travel of the brake pedal, or
when the brakes do not work effectively. Free travel
is the distance the brake pedal moves before braking
resistance is felt.
1.
Disengage the locking pin from the brake pedals
so that both pedals work independently of each
other.
2.
To reduce the amount of free travel of the brake
pedals, tighten the brakes by loosening the
front nut on the threaded end of the brake cable
(Figure
70). Then tighten rear nut to move cable
backward until brake pedals have 1.2 to 2.5 cm
(1/2 to 1 inch) of free travel. Tighten the front
nuts after the brakes are adjusted correctly.
