Transmission position display
Transmission position/shift range
:
Current shift range : is shown in the instru-
ment cluster display.
When the selector lever is in position D, you
can influence the gearshifts made by the
automatic transmission by:
restricting the shift range
R
changing gear yourself
R
Transmission positions
Park position
B
This prevents the vehicle from roll-
ing away when stopped. Do not
shift the transmission into position
P(
Y
page 91) unless the vehicle is
stationary.

The key can only be removed if
the transmission is in position P.
When there is no key in the igni-
tion lock, the selector lever is
locked in position P.
Have the vehicle electronics
checked immediately at a qualified
specialist workshop.
Reverse gear
C
Only shift the transmission to R
when the vehicle is stationary.
Neutral
A
No power is transmitted from the
engine to the drive wheels.
Releasing the brakes will allow you
to move the vehicle freely, e.g. to
push it or tow it.
Do not shift the transmission to N
while driving. Otherwise, the auto-
matic transmission could be dam-
aged.
Shift into N briefly, if:
there is a risk of the vehicle skid-
R
ding, e.g. on slippery roads in
winter.
you want to engage the transfer
R
case.

Rolling in neutral N can lead to
damage to the transmission.
Drive

The automatic transmission
changes gear automatically. All
forward gears are available.
Changing gear
The automatic transmission shifts to the indi-
vidual gears automatically when it is in trans-
mission position D. Gearshifting is deter-
mined by:
a shift range restriction, if selected
R
the position of the transfer case (HIGH or
R
LOW)
the position of the accelerator pedal
R
the road speed
R
