3.3.3.1 Access Ladder General Climbing Procedure (refer to Figure 3-15 and drawing 174195)
The following procedure describes the general technique for positioning and climbing the access
ladder. The specific installation and maintenance procedures required to be performed using the
access ladder are described in the Raytheon Maintenance Manual
THE PROCEDURES OUTLINED IN THIS MANUAL AND RAYTHEON MANUAL
XXX MUST BE FOLLOWED WHEN USING THE ACCESS LADDER. ANYONE
CLIMBING THE LADDER MUST WEAR A FULL BODY HARNESS WITH
FRONTAL D RING AND A LANYARD WITH DOUBLE LOCKING SNAP HOOK
(12 INCH COMBINED MAXIMUM LENGTH) TO ATTACH TO THE TIE-OFF BAR
AT THE TOP OF THE LADDER. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN SERIOUS
INJURY.
a.
When not in use the access ladder is stowed in the center position with the extension section fully
retracted. The ball lock pin (item 5), 2" hardware (items 9, 15 & 16), and 3/8" hardware and spacers
(item 10, 11, 17, 18 & 19) must be installed when the ladder is stowed. Before using the ladder
remove and store the 2" hardware and 3/8" hardware and spacers.
b.
The ladder can be moved horizontally and used only in three positions; center, left and right along the
fixed rails. Do not attempt to use the ladder in any other horizontal position as there is no provision to pin
the bottom end of the ladder in any other position.
c.
To move the ladder along the fixed rails, remove the ball lock pin in the lower ladder bracket. Slide
the ladder along the fixed rails by pushing it in the desired direction until the slot in the ladder bracket
aligns with the hole in the fixed rail. Install the ball lock pin through both walls of the fixed rail.
Note: It is easier to slide the ladder by pushing rather than pulling in the desired direction.
Apply hand force to the ladder rail approximately two rungs above the bottom ladder bracket
when pushing the ladder.
d.
The ladder may be extended a maximum of two rungs. To extend the ladder push the extension
section up as required letting the gravity locks latch onto the first or second rung up from the stowed
position. To lower the ladder, push the extension section up until the gravity locks disengage from
the rung and slide the section back down until the gravity locks latch to the rung in the fully retracted
position.
