Maximum allowable speeds
To get on a highway or to pass slower
traffic, maximum acceleration may be nec-
essary. Make sure you observe the follow-
ing maximum allowable speeds in each
gear:
gear
km/h (mph)
1
15 ( 9)
2
30 (19)
3
50 (31)
4
85 (53)
NOTICE
Do not downshift if you are going
faster than the maximum allowable
speed for the next lower gear.
Good driving practice
If it is difficult to shift into reverse, put
D
the transmission in neutral, release the
clutch pedal momentarily, and then try
again.
When towing a trailer, in order to main-
D
tain engine braking efficiency, do not
use fifth gear.
CAUTION
Be careful when downshifting on a
slippery
surface.
Abrupt
could cause the vehicle to skid or
spin.
NOTICE
z Make sure the vehicle is completely
stopped before shifting into reverse.
z Do not use any gears other than
first gear when starting off and
moving forward. Doing so may dam-
age the clutch.
Exhaust retarder
(exhaust brake) switch
shifting
To operate the exhaust retarder (ex-
haust brake), pull the lever toward you.
This will give a braking as long as the
accelerator pedal is released.
The indicator light on the instrument clus-
ter shows that the exhaust retarder (ex-
haust brake) is ready for operation.
The exhaust retarder (exhaust brake) en-
hances the normal engine braking effect
and help reduce foot brake applications.
Use it when driving down a steep or long
grade with heavy loads or driving in heavy
traffic.
