Installing System Memory

Your X299 DARK has (4) 288-pin slots for
DDR4 memory. These slots support 4GB,
8GB and 16GB DDR4 DIMMs. There must
be at least one memory slot populated for the
board to boot and operate.
The Intel
X299 chipset supports Quad-
®
Channel DDR4 memory, a maximum of
64GB and up to 4000MHz+for Skylake-X,
and 4133MHz+ for Kaby Lake-X (OC)+. It
is recommended to always use a 4 DIMM
Quad Channel kit for Skylake-X, or a 2
DIMM kit for Kaby Lake-X. Fill the
memory slots in the following order: 2, 4,
3, 1. See chart to the right:
Note:
As shown in the chart above, Kaby Lake-X CPUs require DIMMs installed in
Slot DIMM3 and/or Slot DIMM 4 to boot normally.
The X299 Dark will still boot normally with a Kaby Lake-X CPU if memory
DIMMs are also installed in Slots 1 or 2. Neither system operation nor
overclocking will be affected; the board will simply leave these DIMMs
unpowered. DIMMs 3 and 4 must still be populated according to the chart
above, or the motherboard will not boot.
Leaving additional memory DIMMs in Slots 1 and 2 may be useful if you
frequently change CPUs, such as during benchmarking sessions.
