Desulfation Mode
If the battery is left discharged for an extended period of time, it could become
sulfated and not accept a normal charge. If the charger detects a sulfated
battery, the charger will switch to a special mode of operation designed for
such batteries. If successful, normal charging will resume after the battery is
desulfated. Desulfation could take 8 to 10 hours. If desulfation fails, charging
will abort and the CHECK BATTERY LED will blink.
Completion of Charge
Charge completion is indicated by the CHARGED LED. When lit, the charger
has switched to the Maintain Mode of operation.
Maintain Mode (Float-Mode Monitoring)
When the CHARGED LED is lit, the charger has started Maintain Mode. In
this mode, the charger keeps the battery fully charged by delivering a small
current when necessary. If the battery voltage drops below a preset level, the
charger will go back into Charge Mode until the battery voltage returns to the
full charge level, at which point the charger will return to Maintain Mode.
NOTE: The charger automatically switches between Charge Mode and
Maintain Mode as necessary. The CHARGED LED will cycle on when the
battery is at full charge and off when the voltage drops below a preset level
and the charger goes into Charge Mode. This cycle will continue, and the
CHARGED LED will stay on for longer periods of time as the battery becomes
more fully charged.
Maintaining a Battery
The Schumacher SI-200A is a battery maintainer that maintains 12 volt
batteries, keeping them at full charge. It can charge small batteries and
maintain both small and large batteries. If you are maintaining a fully charged
large battery, you will be properly utilizing the battery charger. However, if you
were to use this battery charger to charge a large battery, such as a marine
deep cycle battery that was not fully charged, you may lose some of the
battery's capacity. This would cause the large battery to be unable to hold a
charge and become useless. Therefore, we do not recommend charging a
large battery with this unit.
NOTE: The maintain mode technology utilized in Schumacher maintainers
allows you to safely charge and maintain a healthy battery for extended
periods of time. However, problems with the battery, electrical problems in the
vehicle, improper connections or other unanticipated conditions could cause
excessive current draws. As such, occasionally monitoring your battery and the
charging process is recommended.

CALCULATING CHARGE TIME

Battery Percent and Charge Time: This charger adjusts the charging
time in order to charge the battery completely, efficiently and safely. The
microprocessor automatically performs the necessary functions. This section
includes guidelines that can be used to estimate charging times.
The Hydrometer or Electronic Method
To find the time needed to fully charge your battery, determine the battery's
charge level with a hydrometer or electronic Percent-of-Charge Tester. The
following table will help you convert hydrometer readings to percent of charge
values.
