Speech Engine
There is an intuitive speech engine integrated into the Start
key on your phone.
1. From any screen, press and hold
the intuitive speech engine.
2. Speak the words that you would like to search on or
the action that you would like to perform.
The following examples show the flexibility of the
speech engine:
• "Call Chris mobile"
• "Find coffee in Seattle"
• "Open calendar"
• "Text Brandy"
• "Note send birthday card"
3. To change speech settings, see "Speech" on
page 130.
Note: The first time you use the Speech engine, you are asked

Notifications and Quick Actions
Windows Phone 8.1 gives you quick and easy access to your
most important notifications and settings.

1. Swipe down from the top of your screen to reveal
action center.
Quick actions, like Wi-Fi settings, Bluetooth activate,
screen brightness setting, and rotation lock, display
along with notifications about your latest text
messages, emails, updates, and more.
2. Touch ALL SETTINGS to access the Settings menu. For
more information, refer to "Changing Your Settings" on
page 109.
3. Touch CLEAR ALL to remove the current notifications.
4. Touch the bottom of the screen and swipe up to close
the action center screen.
