Never turn off the power or remove the SmartMedia
while saving or formatting. Doing so may render
the SmartMedia unusable.
You cannot save data on SmartMedia that has little
remaining capacity.
Loading just a single sample
from SmartMedia
You can load individual samples from a file that was saved
by an ESX-1 or ES-1, as well as loading WAVE or AIFF files.

Loading a WAV or AIFF file

1. Insert the SmartMedia into the SmartMedia slot.
2. Press the GLOBAL key (the key will light).
3. Hold down the SHIFT key and press step key 16
(CARD). (Key 16 will blink.) The parameter dis-
play will show "CardMenu."
4. Make sure that the value display shows "Load,"
and press key 16. The parameter display will show
"Load."
5. The value display will show "All." Turn the dial to
select the file format shown in the value display;
either "WAV" or "AIFF." Then press key 16.
6. Select the sample that you want to load. The value
display will show "Load," and the parameter dis-
play will show the "(sample name)" for samples that
match the file format you selected in step 6. Turn
the dial to select a sample. At this time you can press
the PLAY/PAUSE key to play the selected sample.
When you have selected a sample, press key 16.
7. Select the load-destination sample number. The pa-
rameter display will show "LoadTo," and the value
display will show "(sample number in the ESX-1's
internal memory)." (You can press the SHIFT key
to see the name of the sample.) Turn the dial to se-
lect the load-destination number. Already-used
sample numbers have an asterisk "*" at the right
of the sample number. Press key 16 to execute the
Load operation. During loading, the step keys show
the state of progress.

Loading from an ES (ESX-1 or ES-1) file

1. Insert the SmartMedia into the SmartMedia slot.
2. Press the GLOBAL key (the key will light).
3. Hold down the SHIFT key and press step key 16
(CARD). (Key 16 will blink.) The parameter dis-
play will show "CardMenu."
4. Make sure that the value display shows "Load,"
and press key 16. The parameter display will show
"Load."

5. The value display will show "All." Turn the dial to
select "ESsmpl," and press key 16.
6. Select the file from which you want to load. The
parameter display will show "LdFile,"and the pa-
rameter display will show the "(ESX-1 or ES-1 file
names)" existing on the SmartMedia. Turn the dial
to select a user file, and then press key 16.
7. Select the sample that you want to load. The value
display will show "Load," and the parameter dis-
play will show the "(sample name)" for samples in-
side the user file you selected in step 6. Turn the
dial to select a sample. At this time you can press
the PLAY/PAUSE key to play the selected sample.
When you have selected a sample, press key 16.
8. Select the load-destination sample number. The pa-
rameter display will show "LoadTo," and the value
display will show "(sample number in the ESX-1's
internal memory)." Turn the dial to select the load-
destination number.
At this time, you can press the SHIFT key to switch
the display to the sample name.
Already-used sample numbers have an asterisk "*"
at the right of the sample number.
9. Press key 16 to execute the Load operation. During
loading, the step keys show the state of progress.
When loading is completed, you will return to Pat-
tern mode. (Key 16 will go dark, and the Pattern
mode key will light.) If you decide to cancel mid-
way through the procedure, use the mode keys to
switch to a mode other than Global mode (e.g.,
Pattern mode).
This operation will overwrite the internal memory;
use caution, and make sure that you are not over-
writing important data you want to keep
With the factory settings, memory protect is turned
on, so it will not be possible to load samples. Turn
memory protect off before you execute the Load
operation. ( p.83 "Memory Protect")
If the sample you are attempting to load exceeds
the remaining free space in memory, a message
of "MemFull" will appear, and you will be unable to
execute the Load operation. Delete unneeded
samples to increase the amount of free space, and
try the Load operation once again.
