Building a Two-tier System
You may cascade multiple MCCAT units of the same or different mod-
els to form a two-tier system so the number of available channel ports
increases. Up to 256 computers can be connected in this system.
1.
Leave aside one MCCAT unit that you want to make it the first-
tier unit (or base unit) of the two-tier system.
2.
Programme the rest of the MCCAT units as the second-tier devic-
es by following the procedure below.
a.
Switch OFF the MCCAT unit.
b.
Press and hold down its channel number 2 button on the
front panel; then switch ON the MCCAT unit.
c.
Continue to hold down the channel number 2 button until you
hear the beep sound.
d.
The TIER LED on the front panel is lit, indicating this MCCAT
unit is now programmed as a second-tier device.
e.
Repeat Steps a to d to programme other MCCAT units, if
any, as second-tier devices.
3.
Attach MCIM-PS2 to each second-tier MCCAT unit.
a.
Connect MCIM's PS/2 mouse connector to the PS/2 mouse
port of the second-tier MCCAT unit.
b.
Connect MCIM's PS/2 keyboard connector to the PS/2 key-
board port of the second-tier MCCAT unit.
c.
Connect MCIM's video connector to the video port of the
second-tier MCCAT unit.

d.
Repeat Steps a to c until all second-tier MCCAT units have
the MCIM-PS2 attached.
IMPORTANT: Use only MCIM-PS2 to connect second-tier MCCAT
units. Do NOT use MCIM-USB or other CIMs for such connection.
4.
Connect the second-tier MCCAT units to the first-tier MCCAT unit.
a.
Connect one end of a Cat 5 cable to the RJ45 port of the
MCIM-PS2 being attached to a second-tier MCCAT unit.
b.
Connect the other end of the Cat 5 cable to one of the chan-
nel ports of the first-tier MCCAT unit.

c.
Repeat Steps a to b until all second-tier MCCAT units are
connected to the first-tier MCCAT unit.
5.
Connect the PS/2 keyboard, mouse and VGA monitor to the first-
tier MCCAT unit.
a.
Connect the PS/2 keyboard to the PS/2 keyboard port of the
MCCAT unit.
b.
Connect the PS/2 mouse to the PS/2 mouse port of the
MCCAT unit.
c.
Connect the VGA connector of the monitor to the video port
of the MCCAT unit.

d.
Connect the monitor's power cord to the appropriate power
outlet and switch it on.
6.
Connect the power cords to the second-tier MCCAT untis and
switch them ON.
7.
Connect the power cord to the first-tier MCCAT unit and switch it
ON.

8.
Specify the type of the second-tier MCCAT units in the
Configuration Menu of the On-Screen Display (OSD) interface.
a.
Activate the OSD by pressing the Scroll Lock key twice
QUICKLY. The OSD appears on the screen.
b.
Press F4 to display the Configuration Menu.
c.
Press Tab to select the Device field. The first dot of the
Device field blinks when the field is selected.
d.
The dots from left to right represent the first-tier MCCAT unit's
channel numbers 1, 2, 3 and so forth. Press RIGHT or LEFT
arrow keys (, ) to select the appropriate dot and type y for
MCCAT18 or z for MCCAT116. For example, if connecting the
MCCAT18 unit to the third channel port of the first-tier unit, select
the third dot and type y; if connecting MCCAT116 to the fifteenth
channel port, select the fifteenth dot and type z.
9.
Connect computers to the two-tier MCCAT system. For detailed
information, see "CONNECTING COMPUTERS."
a.
Attach an MCIM (MCIM-PS2 or MCIM-USB) to each com-
puter.
b.
Connect Cat 5 cables to MCIMs being attached to the com-
puters.
c.
Connect the other end of Cat 5 cables to available channel
ports of the second-tier or even first-tier MCCAT units.

Selecting a Channel
After installation, you can select any channel to access the computers
attached to the MCCAT unit. There are two methods to select a chan-
nel:
Front panel buttons

OSD interface
Front Panel Approach
1.
Verify the OSD is not displayed on the screen. Otherwise, the
front panel operation is invalid.
2.
Press the button whose number is the same as the number of
the channel port where the desired computer is connected.
The video of the chosen computer will appear on the screen and you
can control the computer with the keyboard and mouse attached to
the MCCAT unit.
Note: This approach can only apply to a one-tier MCCAT system or
to those computers attached with the first-tier MCCAT unit in a two-
tier system.
OSD Approach
The default name for the connected computers is shown PC<xxxx>
on the OSD and the name for the second-tier MCCAT units is shown
/MCCAT<xx>. <xxxx> and <xx> are the numbers of the channel
ports where these devices are attached.
1.
Press the Scroll Lock key twice QUICKLY to activate the OSD
interface. The OSD appears on the screen, with the Selection
Menu displayed.
2.
(Optional) If the desired channel is not found on the current
page, press Page Down or Page Up to switch between pages.
3.
Press the DOWN or UP arrow keys (, ) to move the yellow
highlight bar to the desired channel.
4.
Press Enter to access the computer. The OSD disappears and
the video of the selected computer appears.
Now you can control the computer with the keyboard and mouse
attached to the MCCAT unit. To access another channel or computer,
repeat Steps 1 to 4.
Downloading the User Guide
The MCCAT user guide, which provides more information regard-
ing the product's features and operation, is downloadable from the
Raritan website (www.raritan.com).

1.
Link to the Raritan website (www.raritan.com) with your browser.
2.
Click Support > Firmware and Documentation > MasterConsole
CAT.
3.
Click the User Guide on the right pane.
4.
Click the latest version to download if a list of user guides are
shown on the screen.
5.
Follow the onscreen instructions until the download completes.
User Guide in Other Languages
Raritan offers up to six translated user guides for users whose
tongue language is NOT English.
1.
Link to the Raritan website (www.raritan.com) with your browser.
2.
Choose the desired language from the drop-down list of the
Choose Country field. Now you are directed to the regional
Raritan website.
3.
Locate the MasterConsole CAT user guide on that website and
click it to start the download process.
