FIRST hEATInG UP

Always keep the stove under supervision when the door of the fire chamber or the ash
box are not firmly closed!
Before lighting the fire for the first time make sure you have removed all the accessories from
inside the stove or the ash box. Make sure that there is nothing on top of the stove and that
the convection openings are not obstructed. Open the doors and windows to ensure sufficient
ventilation. The reason for this is that the stove is coated with a heat resistant lacquer which
only achieves its final hardness after about one day's burning at the rated heating capacity
of the stove. This may produce an unpleasant smell which disappears when the lacquer has
hardened. When the fire is lit for the first time, allow the door to fall back into position but do
not lock it. This prevents the sealing cord from adhering to the lacquer. This also applies for
the ash box. Remember! Keep a watchful eye on the on the stove for as long as the door to
the fire chamber or the ash box are not firmly locked into position!
n O pen the primary and secondary air slides completely. Leave them open during the whole
of the first warm up.
n T ake the kindling material (not petrol, paraffin etc.) such as standard fire lighters and lay
small pieces of wood on the grate. Light the fire lighters.
n A s already mentioned, close the door but do not lock it into position.
n A t this point the stove system is still cold, i.e. the stove, stovepipe and chimney have not
yet reached the desired operating temperature. By leaving the door slightly open during
the kindling phase you assist this whole process. When you add more material to the
flames some smoke may escape into the room.
n A llow the first pieces of wood to burn down until there is only a red glow. Open the door
slowly to allow the pressure on both sides to equalise and prevent smoke from escaping.
n D o not re-stoke with fresh fuel too soon. Avoid a pile up of hot glowing embers on the
grate through stoking too soon. This may cause damage by overheating.
n I f necessary remove ash by shaking the grate or raking it through.
The stove must remain in operation for a number of hours until the lacquer has
hardened completely.
