Installing or Replacing Server Components

Replacing a SAS Expander

The SAS expander is a card that plugs directly into the drive backplane. See
Controller Considerations"
The SAS expander is required for the SFF 24-drive option and the LFF 12-drive option.
Note
The SFF 16-drive option does not use the SAS expander.
To install or replace a SAS expander, follow these steps:
Prepare the server for component replacement:
Step 1

If you cannot safely view and access the component, remove the server from the rack.

Remove the fan tray from the server (see

Disconnect all cables from the SAS expander.
Step 3
Remove the SAS expander:

The motherboard heatsinks in front of the DIMM slots have sharp corners. When you pull the SAS

expander from the backplane, use caution to avoid injuring your fingers.

Install the new SAS expander:

Reconnect SAS cables to the new SAS expander.

Power off the server as described in the
page

Slide the server out the front of the rack far enough so that you can remove the top cover. You might
have to detach cables from the rear panel to provide clearance.
Remove the top cover as described in
page
3-8.
Pinch the blue-plastic lever at each end of the fan tray to release the lever from the chassis.
Simultaneously rotate both levers up 90-degrees. The cam action of the levers lifts the fan tray up
and disengages the six fan modules from their connectors on the motherboard.
Lift the fan tray straight up and remove it from the chassis.
Use a #2 Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the two screws that secure the SAS expander to the
backplane assembly steel tray (see
Pull on both corners of the SAS expander to disengage it from the sockets on the drive backplane
and then set the SAS expander aside on an antistatic mat.
Push the two board-edge connectors on the new SAS expander into the two sockets on the
backplane.
Use a #2 Phillips-head screwdriver to install the two screws that secure the SAS expander to the
backplane assembly steel tray (see
