SMOCKING STITCHES

Smocking is a technique used to gather fabric so that it can stretch. Smocking
has been used since the Middle Ages and was commonly used in garments
where buttons were undesirable. The fabric was gathered or pleated and the
gathers were then held in place by different types of stitches.
Today we have a more modern way to do smocking. Use light weight fabric,
that is already pleated and decorate it with the smocking stitches in your
machine (3:28-3:31 (650)/3:32-3:36 (670)). The fi nis hed result imitates hand
smocking as it was made hundreds of years ago.
1. Select stitch 3:30 (650)/3:35 (670). Stitch the smocking stitch across the
pleated fabric, using one of the pleating threads as a guideline to keep
stitching row straight.
2. Reselect the same stitch and mirror it side to side. Begin sewing at exactly
the same starting point. Stitch next to the fi rst row of stitching matching
the points of this "wave" smocking stitch.
3. Select stitch 3:28 (650)/3:32 (670) for the cable stitch, and stitch and an
additional row of smocking.
4. Continue decorating the fabric.

AUTOMATIC TAPERING STITCHES

(Only on 670)
The Automatic Tapering Stitches can be used to form corners and points but
also to create satin stitch lettering.
1. Select an Automatic Tapering Stitch (1:37-38).
2. Place the fabric under the presser foot. Lower the presser foot.
3. Start sewing. The machine will sew the tapered point and then continue
with the stitch in the selected stitch width. A reverse icon is shown on the
TouchScreen. When the stitch reaches the desired length, press Reverse to
start the end tapering. When the tapering is completed the machine stops
automatically.
4. To repeat the Automatic Tapering stitch press STOP.
Tip: For a narrower stitch, adjust the stitch width.
Tip: To begin with a fl at end satin stitch, touch reverse before beginning to sew.
