Installing the RAID controller
Attention: If you install the RAID controller on an onboard SATA and hot-swap based server, you need to
reconfigure the RAID controller and reinstall the operating system. Make sure you back up your data before
reconfiguration and reinstallation. Use the ThinkServer EasyStartup DVD that came with your server to
reconfigure the RAID controller, reinstall device drivers, and reinstall the operating system.
To install the RAID controller, do the following:
Note: Use any documentation that comes with the RAID controller and follow those instructions in addition
to the instructions in this topic.
1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server. Then, disconnect all
power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the server.
2. Remove the server cover. See "Removing the server cover" on page 37.
3. Remove the riser card assembly. See "Removing the riser card assembly" on page 52.
4. Touch the static-protective package that contains the RAID controller to any unpainted surface on the
outside of the server. Then, remove the RAID controller from the package.
5. Install the ThinkServer 8708EM2 RAID Battery (hereafter called the battery card assembly) on the
RAID controller. Use any documentation that comes with the battery card assembly and follow those
instructions in addition to the instructions in "Installing the ThinkServer 8708EM2 RAID Battery"
on page 65.
Note: The ThinkServer 8708EM2 RAID Battery does not come with the RAID controller. You need
to separately order it.
6. Use the two 630 mm (24.8 inches) mini SAS signal cables. Connect one end of one mini SAS signal
cable to port 0-3 on the RAID controller and one end of the other mini SAS signal cable to port 4-7 on
the RAID controller. See "Overview of the 8708EM2 RAID controller" on page 63.
7. Locate an appropriate PCI card slot on the riser card assembly. Then, remove the screw on the side that
secures the metal slot cover.
8. Install the RAID controller into an appropriate PCI card slot on the riser card assembly. Then, install
the screw to secure the RAID controller in place.
