If a battery which does not meet specifications is used, the electric system could perform poorly or be overloaded, causing electric system damage.     EMU01750 INSTALLATION Incorrect engine height or obstructions to smooth water flow (such as the design or condition of the boat or acces- sories such as transom ladders/depth finder transducers) can create airborne water spray while the boat is cruising. Severe engine damage may result if the motor is operated continuously in the presence of airborne water spray.

    EMU14780 MOUNTING THE OUTBOARD MOTOR 8 Overpowering boat cause severe instability. Do not install an out- board motor with more horsepower than the maximum rating on the capacity plate of the boat. If the boat does not have a capacity plate, consult the boat manufacturer.
  • Page 40 Mount the outboard motor on the center line (keel line) of the boat, and ensure that the boat itself is well balanced. Otherwise, the boat will be hard to steer. For boats without a keel or which are asymmetrical, consult your dealer.

    EMU13180 CLAMPING THE OUTBOARD MOTOR 1) Place the outboard on the transom so that it is positioned as close to the cen- ter as possible. Tighten the transom clamp screws evenly and securely. Check the clamp-screws for tightness occasionally during operation of the 409011 motor as they can work loose due to engine vibration.

    EMU18760 CHARGING BATTERY For T9.9MH If an accessory battery charging is required, proceed the following steps for connecting the charging circuit to the battery.     EMU02240 BREAKING IN (RUNNING IN) ENGINE Your new engine requires a period of break- in (running-in) to allow mating surfaces of moving parts to wear-in evenly. Correct break-in (running-in) will help ensure proper performance and longer engine life. Failure to follow the break-in (running-in) procedure may result in reduced engine life or even severe engine damage.

    While many additives available may reduce deposits, Yamaha recommends the use of Ring Free Fuel Additive, available from your Yamaha dealer.     It is advisable to have your outboard ser- viced by an authorized Yamaha dealer prior to storage. However, the following proce- dures can be performed by you, the owner, with a minimum of tools.

    Do not attempt to diagnose any problems yourself. Instead, take the outboard motor to a Yamaha dealer. You should periodically remove and inspect the spark plug because heat and deposits will cause the spark plug to slowly break down and erode.
