Method of Teaching
Use Blackline Masters 10.1 and 10.2 to create overheads or handouts for using
the SOLVER in applications with the area of a circular sector. Demonstrate the
steps to prepare the calculator for use with the SOLVER, and emphasize the fact
that the central angle in the formula for the area of a sector of a circle must be
in radians, not degrees. Encourage students to give units with all answers.
Next, use Blackline Master 10.3 to create a worksheet for finding the area of a
circular sector. Encourage students to explore all three techniques (Equation,
Newton, and Graphic) available in the SOLVER so they will have experience
with other methods if the one they are attempting to use fails. Use the topics
For Discussion provided to supplement the worksheets.
