CAUTION:
The heat sink and microprocessor might be very hot. Turn off the computer and wait
three to five minutes to let the computer cool before opening the computer cover.
To replace the system board:
1. Open the computer cover. See "Opening the computer cover" on page 68.
2. Take notes of the location of all the cable connectors on the system board and then disconnect all the
cables. See "Locating parts on the system board" on page 67.
3. Remove the heat sink from the system board. See "Replacing the heat sink" on page 73.
4. Remove the memory modules from the failing system board. See "Replacing a memory module"
on page 70.
5. Remove the battery from the failing system board. See "Replacing the battery" on page 71.
6. Remove the microprocessor from the failing system board. See "Replacing the microprocessor" on
page 75.
7. Remove the four screws that secure the failing system board to the protective cover.
8. Lift the failing system board off the cover.
9. Position the new system board so that the screw holes are aligned with the mounting studs on the cover.
10. Install the screws to secure the new system board to the protective cover.
11. Install the memory modules, battery, and microprocessor that you removed from the failing system
board to the new system board.
12. Slide the new system board to the rear of the chassis and then pivot it inward until it is locked into position.
13. Connect all the cables to the new system board. See "Locating parts on the system board" on page 67.
14. Install the heat sink to the new system board. See "Replacing the heat sink" on page 73.
15. Go to "Completing the parts replacement" on page 87.
The failing system board must be returned with a microprocessor socket cover to protect the pins during
shipping and handling.
To install the microprocessor socket cover, do the following:
1. Release the lever securing the microprocessor retainer and open the retainer to access the
microprocessor.
2. Grasp the microprocessor on the sides and lift it straight up and out of the socket. Do not touch the
contacts on the microprocessor socket.
3. Note the orientation of the socket cover. Align the notches
the alignment keys
4. Install one side of the socket cover into the microprocessor socket as shown.
