In the X-OVER FREQ line, you will select the fre-
quency under which bass information is directed
to the Subwoofer Output and above which the
remaining signal is directed to all speakers that
are set to SMALL. When making these selections,
choose the crossover frequency that is closest to
the lower frequency limit of your "SMALL"
speakers. This figure is normally printed in the
owner's manual or data sheet for the speakers; or
consult the speaker's manufacturer.
When any of the speakers has been set to
SMALL, a wide range of crossover frequencies
between 60 Hz and 120 Hz are available. The
recommended crossover choices are 80 Hz,
100 Hz or 120 Hz to match the typical crossover
points of the smaller speakers used in satellite
speaker systems. Choose the option that is
closest to your speakers' design.
When all speaker selections have been made,
press the (
) Button twice to return to AUDIO
menu.

Output Level Adjustment

Output level adjustment is a key part of the con-
figuration process for any surround sound pro-
duct. It is particularly important for DVD-Audio,
as correct outputs will ensure that you hear
sound tracks with the proper directionality and
intensity.
NOTE: Listeners are often confused about the
operation of the surround channels. While some
assume that sound should always be coming
from each speaker, most of the time there will be
little or no sound in the surround channels. This
is because they are only used when a movie
director or sound mixer specifically places sound
there to create ambiance, a special effect or to
continue action from the front of the room to the
rear. When the output levels are properly set it is
normal for surround speakers to operate only
occasionally. Artificially increasing the volume to
the rear speakers may destroy the illusion of an
enveloping sound field that duplicates the way
you hear sound in a movie theater or concert
hall.
The factory setting for the Output Level Adjust-
ment is BYPASS. This setting is recommended for
an optimal undamped output level of 0 dB.
In case you feel adjustments are necessary in
your setup, set the Output Level Adjustment to
ACTIVE, using the (
) and (
) buttons.
¤
Once set to ACTIVE, all speakers can be adjusted
between -10dB and + 10dB.
Before beginning the output level adjustment
process, make certain that all speaker connec-
tions on your A/V Receiver have been properly
made and that the 6 Channel direct outputs have
been connected correctly to the 6 Channel Input
of your A/V Receiver.
To adjust and calibrate the output levels, follow
these steps. For accurate calibration, it is a good
idea to make these adjustments while seated in
your favorite listening position. As the adjustment
must be made for DVD-Audio (6 Ch Direct), you
would need to select 6 Ch Direct on your A/V
Receiver or Surround processor.
1. Select the 6 Ch Direct Input associated with
DVD-Audio on your A/V Receiver or Surround
processor.
2. Select OUTPUT LEVEL ADJUSTMENT with the
ARROW (
) buttons, if it is not already select-
⁄¤
ed, then press ARROW (
) or ENTER to access
the OUTPUT LEVEL ADJUSTMENT sub-menu.
Make sure the Output Level Adjustment is set to
ACTIVE.
3. Press (
) to highlight TEST TONE. Activate the
¤
test tone by using the (
) and (
) buttons and
¤
ENTER.
Note: You can also adjust the level of all speakers
without the Test Tone. In that case, leave the Test
Tone set to OFF.
4. Press (
) to highlight FRONT LEFT. You will
¤
immediately hear a test tone coming from the
front left speaker. Use this level as the reference
and press the (
) button to move to the FRONT
¤
RIGHT.
5. When the front right is highlighted on the
screen, you will hear the test tone move from the
left front speaker to the front right speaker. Press
the (
) to move the cursor to the right column on
the screen, and adjust the level of the front right
by using the (
) buttons, until the level is
⁄¤
equal to the level of the left front speaker.
6. Press the (
) and (
) button to move to the
¤
CENTER, and continue to adjust the remaining
individual speakers as described above.
Note that the adjustments should be made with
the (
) buttons on the remote control of the
⁄¤
DVD 30 only, NOT with the main volume controls
on your A/V Receiver.
When all channels have the same output level,
press (
) two times to go back to the player's
AUDIO MENU.
