Performance and Sizing
The TL895 Tape Library adds scalability for tape retention and performance demands. This
powerful tape library is available in models using from two to seven drives, featuring high
performance DLT 35/70 drives to fit any lights out enterprise backup solution needs.
Compaq also developed industry leading performance tests that analyze the affects automated
tape libraries have on enterprise based lights out backup solutions.

contains in-depth details of factors affecting performance (Chapter 4: Performance) and factors
to consider in calculating tape retention (Chapter 8: Sizing). This tech note introduced the
Backup and Restore formulas that allow easy estimation of performance at varying rates of
compression. Benchmark testing and additional calculations of performance impacted by tape
changes, controller feed speeds, and backup job type are described and tested.
With the integration of the TL895 Tape Library into the Compaq StorageWorks Enterprise
Backup Solution, new performance levels exceeding 180 Gigabytes per hour can now be
reached.
The enhanced Compaq StorageWorks Backup Sizing Tool allows either the TL895 or the DLT
15 Cartridge Library Model 35/70 libraries to be selected for performance solutions in an EBS
environment. This state of the art tool applies all the calculations to real world solutions,
yielding realistic performance estimates.
