When my phone rings and I have my answering device set to answer after the 3rd or 4th ring the phone line goes dead after the 2nd ring and the answering machine can't pick up the call or the message.

The phone line could go dead after the 2nd ring if the CS 5500 detects a CNG tone (fax tone) or access code (#11) and automatically transfers the call to the FAX/MODEM port. This prevents the call from reaching the answering machine.

The Command Communications ComSwitch 5500 automatically sets the number of rings to 2 when transferring an unanswered call to the FAX/MODEM port. It resets to 6 rings after 10 minutes of inactivity. You can manually reset it to 6 rings by doing any of the following:

- Lift the receiver of any phone on the line connected to the CS 5500 and hang it up.
- Answer a call before it is transferred to the FAX/MODEM port.
- Place an outbound call from any phone connected to the CS 5500.
