A
A4. Standard metric paper size designation 210 x 297 mmroughly equivalent to a sheet size of
8¼ x 11¾.
Application software. Software product, such as a spreadsheet or word processing program,
designed for use on a PC.
B
Bidirectional Alignment Pattern. Test pattern which prints as a part of the print cartridge
alignment procedure. The pattern indicates the correct setting to enter in the box on the Align
Cartridges dialog box (in the printer control software) to obtain the best printhead alignment.
Bidirectional Cable. Interface cable which connects the printer to the computer and supports
communications between the two, in both directions.
Bidirectional Printing. Printing in which the printhead moves left to right, then right to left, with
each succeeding line.
Byte. Representation of a character: eight bits make up a byte.

Carrier Contact. Area inside the cartridge carriers which touches the copper-colored section of
the print cartridges.
Coated Paper. Paper with one side specially coated to provide optimum results for color printing
on an ink-jet printer.
D
DOS Application. Software application which runs under MS-DOS rather than in the Microsoft
Windows environment.
Draft-quality print. Rapid, low-density printing used for draft material. Contrast with
Letter-quality Print .
Driver. Program that translates the software applications language to that of the printer so the
two can communicate.
E
Emulation. Set of commands that instruct the printer to imitate another printer.
Envelope Guides. Pivoting guides on the sheet feeder which are rotated inward for loading
envelopes or index cards.

Faxable Facts. Okidatas on-line document retrieval system, accessible by calling
1-800 OKIDATA.
